Amazing seniors cook up a storm

A GROUP of senior citizens cooked meals for the needy during the Amazing Raya Charity Cookout. The volunteers were from Amazing Seniors, an online platform designed for adults aged 50 and above to enter the job market. The recent event was organised by Amazing Seniors directors Jasmin Amirul Ghani and Penny Low, together with The Assembly Soup Kitchen (T.A.S.K) founders Wong Suet Beng and Soo Mun Keong. Aunty Nellie’s Easy Rempah founder Nelly Lim Abdullah was one of the volunteer chefs who worked tirelessly to prepare the meals. “We put a lot of effort into providing quality food for the underprivileged,” she said. The food was prepared at the T.A.S.K community kitchen in Shah Alam, Selangor, for more than 700 recipients that day. Over 20 volunteers, including university students, helped out in making sandwiches and dishes which were sent to the needy.

“T.A.S.K usually cooks about 3,000 hot meals every week. “We provide a platform for volunteers to spend time doing good by helping those mostly within Sunway Mentari (250 families), Subang Jaya USJ (250 families), Lembah Subang (150 families) and Puchong (200 families). “About 50% are refugee families as they have been among those who struggled the most during the movement control order,” said Wong. The B40 and indigenous communities were also included in the list of recipients. “Our goal is long term. We try to ensure sufficient food for those in need. “We hope to create more awareness on the needs of underprivileged communities,” said Soo. The practice of zero waste was implemented as a secondary objective for the event, to be part of sustainability efforts. Excess vegetables were made into compost, while surplus ingredients were packed into reusable containers. T.A.S.K depends on cash donations as well as contributions in the form of dried goods, frozen food, fresh vegetables and even face masks.
